Standards of
Ethical Conduct

Adapted from nationally recognized professional educator ethics, federal civil rights laws, and best practices for educational professionals.

Ethical Commitment

EDUCATE believes every individual has inherent worth and dignity. We are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment that promotes academic excellence, character development, lifelong learning, and responsible citizenship. We uphold the principles of equal opportunity, educational access, and the freedom to teach and learn in an environment free from discrimination and harassment.

Our primary responsibility is the well-being, growth, and success of every student. All employees are expected to demonstrate integrity, professionalism, sound judgment, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Professional Responsibilities to Students

All employees shall:

  • Protect students from conditions that may be harmful to their physical, emotional, or mental health, safety, or learning.

  • Encourage students to think independently and pursue learning without unreasonable restriction.

  • Respect and support diverse perspectives and ideas appropriate to the educational setting.

  • Present instructional content honestly and accurately without intentionally distorting relevant subject matter.

  • Treat every student with dignity and refrain from actions that intentionally embarrass, demean, intimidate, or humiliate.

  • Respect and protect each student's legal and educational rights.

  • Maintain a learning environment free from discrimination or harassment based on race, color, national origin, ethnicity, religion, sex, age, disability, veteran status, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected under applicable federal, state, or local law.

  • Never exploit a professional relationship with a student for personal, financial, political, or other personal gain.

  • Protect the confidentiality of student records and personally identifiable information in accordance with applicable privacy laws, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), except when disclosure is authorized by law or necessary to protect student safety.

Professional Responsibilities to Colleagues and the Community

Employees are expected to maintain the trust and confidence of students, families, colleagues, and the communities we serve. Accordingly, employees shall:

  • Conduct themselves honestly, ethically, and professionally in all interactions.

  • Treat colleagues fairly and respectfully without discrimination or retaliation.

  • Respect the civil and professional rights of fellow employees.

  • Refrain from harassment, bullying, intimidation, or discriminatory conduct that interferes with another person's ability to work or learn.

  • Avoid knowingly making false, misleading, or malicious statements about colleagues or the organization.

  • Model professionalism, integrity, accountability, and ethical decision-making in all aspects of employment.

Professional Development

All instructional personnel, educational support staff, administrators, and volunteers, as applicable, are required to complete annual training regarding these Standards of Ethical Conduct, student safety, mandated reporting responsibilities, and applicable organizational policies.

Reporting Misconduct

Every employee has an affirmative responsibility to report conduct that may endanger the health, safety, welfare, or rights of a student or violate these ethical standards.

Examples of misconduct include, but are not limited to:

  • Physical, emotional, or verbal abuse

  • Sexual misconduct or inappropriate relationships

  • Harassment or discrimination

  • Bullying or intimidation

  • Drug or alcohol impairment while supervising students

  • Falsification of records

  • Academic dishonesty or testing irregularities

  • Theft, fraud, or misuse of school resources

  • Violations of student privacy

  • Any conduct that compromises student safety or professional integrity

Reports should be made immediately to the appropriate supervisor, school administrator, Human Resources representative, or other designated organizational official. Reports will be investigated promptly and confidentially to the extent permitted by law.

Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse or Neglect

All employees, contractors, volunteers, and agents must comply with applicable state laws regarding the reporting of suspected child abuse, neglect, abandonment, exploitation, or human trafficking.

Any individual who has reasonable cause to suspect abuse or neglect must immediately report concerns to the appropriate child protective services agency or law enforcement authority in the state where the child resides or where the incident occurred, in accordance with local reporting requirements.

Possible Indicators of Abuse or Neglect

Indicators may include, but are not limited to:

  • Unexplained injuries, bruises, burns, or fractures

  • Significant changes in behavior, mood, or academic performance

  • Fearfulness around certain individuals or reluctance to return home

  • Poor hygiene, malnutrition, inadequate supervision, or unmet medical needs

  • Sexualized behavior inappropriate for the child's developmental level

  • Frequent absences, withdrawal, depression, or sudden changes in appearance

While a single indicator may not confirm abuse, patterns or combinations of concerns should always be taken seriously and reported promptly.

Protection for Good Faith Reporting

EDUCATE prohibits retaliation against any employee who, in good faith, reports suspected misconduct, child abuse, neglect, safety concerns, or violations of these ethical standards. Individuals who report concerns honestly and in good faith are protected under applicable federal and state laws. Employees are expected to cooperate fully with investigations while maintaining confidentiality throughout the process.

By working with EDUCATE, every team member agrees to uphold these Standards of Ethical Conduct and to contribute to a safe, respectful, and supportive educational environment where every student has the opportunity to succeed.
