- What is the Difference Between Homeschooling and Online School?
With all the options in education, parents might be confused about the difference between attending online school from home and “home schooling”. The main differences between online school and homeschooling are found in the responsibilities of the parent or guardian. With online schooling, the school is responsible to the state for meeting mandated education requirements. With homeschooling, it is the parent or guardian who answers to the state. Online school An online school is simply a school that is administered online. Global provides online school. Students are afforded flexibility as to where and when they do their lessons, but they are surrounded by a support system. Parent responsibilities are to support and guide, but Global chooses the curriculum, designs lessons, proctors tests, and keeps records. Global has already chosen the curriculum and contracted with certified teachers for every subject. Global has staff and programs for social and emotional support. For students who are eligible for advanced courses, concurrent college enrollment, or certificate programs, we have staff to support and guide students towards these opportunities. Home schooling Homeschooling places the responsibility on the parent or guardian. The parent is considered the teacher and is responsible to the state for meeting education requirements. Even if a family is using a curriculum that is provided online, the parent or guardian is in charge of designing lessons, keeping track of attendance, issuing a diploma, and maintaining records. The quality of the education provided by parents can vary greatly, depending on the background of the parent and the amount of time they have to devote to homeschooling. Homeschooling provides flexibility for the student, just as online school does, and it also gives parents more control and responsibility. School is never “one size fits all” At Global, we believe that each student is an individual and every family must make their own choice. Options for education help us all to improve! Whether you choose a traditional school setting, online education, or homeschooling, your child has a bright future!
- How Online School Can Benefit the Student Athlete
If there is one thing every student athlete needs, it’s more time! Balancing training and competition schedules with traditional school can be daunting. For a multi-sport athlete, this is even more challenging. Hyper-focused elite athletes who train for hours every day could also benefit from a little more room in their academic schedules. Even students just wanting to try out for a high school team but who may also have a part time job or other challenges can benefit from the flexibility provided through online school. Multi-sport Athletes Students who spend hours every day after school practicing on their high school teams may think they have to stay in traditional school in order to play on their teams. This is not true. Regardless of enrollment in the local school, students who live within the district can participate on their local school’s teams. This means a student can benefit from the flexibility of online school while also playing on their home team! Athletes with Schedule Challenges Some students may wish to participate in sports, but they have a lot going on in their lives. They may have to hold down a job to help with family expenses or have to babysit younger siblings. To them, it seems impossible to find the time for sports. The physical and mental health benefits of sports and athletic participation for students are well-proven. With online school, even students with other scheduling challenges may be able to participate. Elite Athletes in Training Young athletes who compete on traveling teams, and high level gymnasts, ice skaters, dancers, and other athletes in training, and can all benefit from online school. They can bring their schoolwork with them when traveling and can work on their own schedule. The class does not proceed without them if they have to miss a day or two. Their classes wait for them and they work at their own pace. For student athletes, the option of online school may provide just the flexibility these students need to excel in their academics while also pursuing their passion for athletics!
- Tips for Balancing Online School and Parenting
Ask any parent, and they will tell you, taking care of a child is a big job! Even so, it is possible to complete your education online while balancing your job as a parent. It will be challenging, but the benefits to you and your child will outweigh the costs for years to come. Read on to discover a few tips for balancing online school and parenting. Communicate The most important first step is to make sure the people on your team know what challenges you are facing. Reach out to your coach, mentor, counselor, or a teacher you feel comfortable with. Your online school likely has access to wrap-around services that can provide you with help from pregnancy through pre-school. Trying to manage everything on your own is not good for you or your child. Reach Out Besides your online school team, you may also have a “home team”. Reach out to your family members and friends. Even a younger sibling may be able to watch the baby while you study. Your child can stay nearby, with someone else to hold or entertain them. Of course, if you have a trusted and competent babysitter, they will be invaluable when you need to complete important assignments or when you have to take a test. Set a Routine Having a routine can help you to plan and schedule your days - most days! There will be times when nap time is delayed or doesn’t happen at all, but if you can keep your child on a familiar daily schedule most of the time, you will be able to find the quiet times. Naptime is a great time to get some schoolwork done! As your child grows, they will be able to entertain themselves for a few minutes at a time with simple and safe toys. Older preschoolers love to pretend to do their “schoolwork” while you do yours. In time, you will find creative ways to manage your time, both as a parent and a student. Completing your education online as a parent will mean you will be juggling responsibilities, but you will learn valuable time management skills. Most importantly, you will earn your diploma, something to make both you and your child smile!
- Physical Activity for Students Working Online
Online schools offer quality education with flexibility. But with so much screen time, how can we ensure that our students are getting enough exercise? Brain Breaks Brain breaks that involve movement are important for learning. The brain processes information during breaks, and physical activity improves concentration. Set a timer for concentrated work time. When the timer goes off, students get up and move! Some may need a little guidance on what to do. Have them walk or run around the block or do a 20-minute soccer practice session. Be creative! Turn on some music and dance. If you have more than one student at home, give them turns to lead a family “workout session”. Online workouts can also be useful. The point is that students get regular physical activity every day. Creative Seating Some students may be able to read while on a stationary bike or treadmill. Don’t worry if you don’t have these things at home. Be creative and use what you have! Students can create their own “standing desk” using books or boxes to elevate their computer. Exercise balls can be used as chairs. Both of these options encourage movement, and changing things up throughout the day can help. Activities Flexibility in their school schedule means it’s an ideal time for students to try new activities! Students who live within a school district, regardless of whether or not they attend the district school, can participate in sports. Check with your local district to find out what’s available. There are also recreation centers, sports leagues, dance, and martial arts schools offering classes. As more and more students are learning online, we can encourage them to incorporate physical activity into each day. We can set them up for a lifetime of good habits!
- How to Encourage Kids to Try New Things
Parents want their children to take advantage of all available opportunities. This may mean trying a new activity, switching schools, or switching from traditional school to online learning. However, when a child is introduced to something new, they don’t always respond with excitement. In fact, some children are reluctant to try anything new at all. Trying new things is all about building confidence. A confident student is more likely to embrace change. Students who doubt themselves may worry they will fail, even if the change is meant to help them to be more successful. So, how can parents instill confidence in their children? Remind Them of Past Successes Kids love to hear stories about themselves. Parents can use these stories to help children define who they are, especially if the stories have to do with overcoming fears. Reminding kids of past successes, and emphasizing the determination needed for these victories, can help kids to see themselves as “determined” and “successful”. Remembering a time they worked at something until they got it right can build students’ confidence and willingness to try new things. Celebrate Small Victories A student is not going to score the winning goal every day, but every day is full of small victories. As parents encourage their children to try new things, the small steps can be celebrated. A student can be praised or rewarded for going to watch a practice for a sport they are thinking of trying, filling out a registration form for an activity, or getting their supplies ready for the first day of school. Each step towards a goal is a small victory. Lead by Example Seeing their parents learn new things can help kids to believe in their own ability to be successful. Parents can also tell their children about their experiences. A parent who has to learn something new at work or start a new job can talk about their own fear of the unknown and then describe the rewards of overcoming that fear. There are lots of ways to build a child’s confidence, and confidence is the key to getting kids to try new things. Confident students can begin new activities, or even start a new school with a positive attitude.
- Tips for Transitioning from Public to Online School
Parents and students are taking advantage of all the benefits of attending online school. Some students can focus better in an online environment, while others need a more flexible schedule. However, families may wonder how to make the transition from walking into a brick and mortar school each day to attending virtual meetings and online classes. How can students make a smooth transition and succeed in their online education? Set a Schedule The biggest mistake students can make with attending online classes is to think that “flexible schedule” means “no schedule”. Online students are in charge of their own schedules, but that means they really need to take charge! Students and parents can use an online scheduling app or a traditional calendar or planner to lay out a daily schedule based on the student’s workload, important due dates and test dates, and the student’s extra curricular obligations. Stay Involved Social connections are important to all students. Online schools often provide a success team and some opportunities to connect with other students. New online students should try out whatever connection opportunities are available, from clubs, programs, and field trips, to live online classes and study groups. These will give students opportunities to connect with peers, teachers, and mentors. Besides building new relationships in their new online environment, students can also continue participating in their favorite extracurricular activities. Regardless of whether or not they attend their district school, students can participate in district sports and activities at their local school. There are also many opportunities for classes, clubs, and activities in the community at recreation centers, churches, and private instructional facilities such as martial arts or dance schools. School Supplies Some online students think that the only school supplies they will need for online learning are their computer and an internet connection! While these are definitely important, students will still need some supplies. A student who is used to writing out math equations and taking notes is likely to struggle if they expect to be able to do all the math in their head and cut and paste notes into a document. Students and families can work together to set up a work area at home and to provide supplies that will help with the hands-on process of learning. The act of writing notes helps build memory connections and sometimes, the best way to work out a math problem is to write it down or draw it out. Students may want to use one of the new erasable, reusable notebooks that allow them to scan notes onto their phone or computer before erasing, but physical participation in learning is always valuable, even for online students. Changing schools is always a big event in a student’s life, but families can make the transition from in-person to online a positive experience. When students set schedules, stay involved with social connections, and ensure they have the tools they need to be successful, this transition can be a smooth and successful one.
- Ways to Keep Your Online Student Creative (Without Art Class)
Many families and students have embraced the opportunity to attend school online. They can set their own schedules and work at a pace that suits them. Some online schools offer art classes, programs, or clubs to keep online students creative. But, what if these are not offered or are just not a good fit? How can families support creativity for online students? Extra Curricular Activities Community recreation centers offer a variety of creative opportunities at a relatively low cost. Online students, with their flexible schedules, can take advantage of classes, camps, and workshops that offer creative outlets. There are also private arts organizations that offer classes and activities. Families looking for organized activities can choose which ones work best for their students. Creative Brain Breaks For students who may not want to take an art class but still need a creative outlet, it only takes a small amount of effort and a few supplies for families to set students up for creative “brain breaks” between study times. Sometimes, all it takes is access to art supplies and students can run with their own ideas! Providing modeling clay, drawing, painting, or coloring supplies are just some ideas. Painting a nearby wall or table with chalkboard paint and providing colorful chalk can encourage student art work! Once families get creative, there really is no limit! Life Skills Many home-based activities can be artistic and can provide creativity for online students. Students can help plan or plant a garden, prepare and present meals, plan and rearrange their rooms, decorate for the holidays, and much more! Students can express their creativity through daily life activities, rather than seeing these activities as “chores.” Students who are encouraged to be creative in all aspects of their daily lives also develop creative problem solving skills because they are learning to look at tasks from many angles. Creativity for online students is an important part of their education. Fortunately, it just takes a few ideas and a gentle nudge in the right direction to keep online students creative!
- How Do Life Coaches Help Online Students?
As more and more families are switching to online schools from traditional “brick and mortar” schools, students and parents are noticing the support systems online schools have for their students. However, families who are used to traditional support roles such as “teacher” and “counselor”, may have some questions about the roles and responsibilities of online school staff members. Many families are wondering, what is a Life Coach, and how do they help online students? A Student’s Go-To Person A student’s life coach is their first go-to. Hopefully, they are one of the first people a student meets, either virtually or at an in person orientation when they enroll. A student is able to reach out to their life coach first and foremost for all their online school needs. If the life coach doesn’t have the answer, they know where to go to get the information their student needs. Scheduling, Pacing, Advising Students new to online school and even those who have been working virtually for several semesters, sometimes have difficulty with scheduling, pacing, and planning. Fortunately, online life coaches excell at scheduling, pacing, and advising students on how to plan for their best educational experience. A student’s life coach meets with them weekly to help them set short and long term goals and review and reward the student’s accomplishments. If a student is struggling to meet their goals, the life coach can help. The important thing is that the student keeps an open and honest line of communication with their coach. Advocate and Cheerleader Students should remember that their life coach is their biggest educational advocate. They do set expectations for the students, but they are also there to support them with whatever they need to be successful. A life coach can help students and parents communicate with teachers and other school staff. They can recommend both internal and external resources for specific student needs. A life coach can also recommend programs and pathways that help with career planning. The Key to Student Success For online students, a life coach can be the key to their success. They are there to greet the student on the first day of school and are the ones cheering the loudest at graduation.
- Is the SAT or ACT Required to Graduate Online High School?14
Options in education are expanding. Students can attend traditional public high schools, private schools, online, and even hybrid schools. Since each one of these schools presents education differently, are the testing and graduation requirements different? What about standardized tests like ACT and SAT? Do all students have to take these? State Requirements The simple answer is, “It depends on the state.” States set education requirements and schools and districts operating within those states have to abide by these rules. However, this answer still leaves a lot of unanswered questions! SAT There are a handful of states that require the SAT for graduation for all high schools, including traditional “brick and mortar” schools as well as online and alternative schools. Colorado requires SAT for all students as a part of their state testing. Other states that require SAT include Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and West Virginia. In Colorado, students do have the right to “opt out” of standardized testing, but if they do, they still have to demonstrate competency in key areas like reading and math before they graduate. ACT and Other Tests Just like some states require SAT, other states require ACT. These include Alabama, Hawaii, Kentucky, Nebraska, Montana, North Carolina, Nevada, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Still other states require students to take either the SAT or ACT. Some allow ACT WorkKeys or other tests that are known locally. And, yes, these requirements exist for all schools, online and traditional alike. Demonstrating Competency The bottom line is that states want schools to demonstrate that their students are prepared for life after high school. This can be done in a number of ways, depending on the state and district. A variety of test scores, a certain GPA, or participation in concurrent enrollment can all be used to demonstrate competency, depending on the requirements of the district and the state. This can seem like a hurdle to some students, but really it is a way to check that schools are doing their best job to prepare students for life after high school. Whether students attend traditional or online high school, competency requirements can be a part of ensuring that all students receive the kind of education they need to prepare for college and career goals after high school.
- How to Determine if Traditional Education is Not Working for Your Child
Schools all over the country are back in session for the fall and parents are posting “first day of school” pictures all over social media. But beneath those smiles, some students are struggling with traditional education. How do parents know when they should make a change for their children? Students are not engaged Kids are not going to love every school subject, but if they just don’t care about any subject, they may be disengaged. Disengaged students are at risk of failing or dropping out. Online schools often have exciting up-to-date learning platforms, new ways of presenting material, and even re-engagement and credit recovery programs that can help disengaged students to complete their education and thrive in school. Students don’t feel safe Sadly, safety at school has become a serious issue, and increasingly so in recent years. Students may fear bullying, illness, threats, or violence while they are at school. They may have anxiety over even going to school each day. When a student is constantly in fear, their “fight, freeze or flight” response is activated and learning takes a back seat in their brain. Online students can work from home or other places where they feel safe and can focus on learning. Some online schools even offer social and emotional learning platforms and resources, as well as wrap-around services that help the whole child to grow and overcome their fears while not sacrificing daily learning. Students are not being prepared for the future What families want most from their children’s education is for students to be prepared for the future. This can mean college or career preparation, and many things in between. Some traditional schools can get stuck in old ways, preparing students for career paths that are no longer available or sustainable. Or, schools can become so focused on every student going to college that they forget to prepare young people for lucrative and fulfilling jobs that don’t require a four-year degree. If parents don’t feel that students are being adequately prepared for their future, it is time for a change. Many online schools are forward thinking, offering revised curriculums and programs to meet the needs of an ever changing world. Parents often have a feeling that something is just not right for their child at school, but they may not know exactly what to look for or when to make a change. However, if a student is disengaged, feels unsafe, or is not being adequately prepared for the future by traditional school, it may be time to check out the online education options available. Every child is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to learning. Online schools offer new ways of learning, flexible schedules and the safety of learning from home, as well as up-to-date career and college preparation. Our world is changing, and online schools are responding by changing education to meet the needs of today’s young people!.
- How To Help a Student Who Is Behind in Online School
